Free comics on offer in Grimsby this weekend thanks to annual international event

A long-standing comic shop in Grimsby town center will be giving away free comics this weekend.

On Saturday May 4, from 10am – 5pm, everyone is invited to Starrider on Victoria Street South to help themselves to a huge selection of free comics to mark both Star Wars Day and Free Comic Book Day 2024.

The store is organizing the event for the fifth consecutive year, having enjoyed good success each previous year, with around twenty copies of 18 titles up for grabs.

Speaking to Grimsby Live, Starrider owner Paul Berry said: “It’s an international event that takes place all over the world. For one day only, local comic shops are giving away free comics. Around 18 different titles are printed especially for the event.

“This is our fifth year doing it and it always seems to go well every year. It brings a lot of people into the store and it’s a great way for people to get into comics. Many comics are original. stories you can’t find anywhere else. This will be on a first come, first served basis, with approximately 20 copies of each title.

Speaking about the growing popularity of comic books in recent years, Paul continued: “There has been a surge in popularity of comic books since all the Marvel films started. They brought greater awareness to comics, and the hobby as a whole became more mainstream. , whereas it used to be a niche.

“They’re great because they get people away from their phones and tablets and help kids who may not have shown much interest in reading before, because the pictures inspire them to read. It’s good for their development.

“It can be a hobby for many people who like to collect them and build a collection. For me, I love art styles and the types of storytelling they enable. They cover a wide range of genres and cater to different tastes.”

Among the titles Starrider will offer on Saturday May 4 are Doctor Who – The Fifteenth Doctor, Star Wars, Marvel Voices, Pokemon Adventures and Stranger Things.
