James Corden and Ruth Jones believe the “right decision” was made regarding the return of Gavin and Stacey to the BBC, announced this week.

It was revealed on Friday that the beloved sitcom will return for its “finale” this Christmas, and is set to air on BBC One. The most recent episode of the BAFTA-winning show was a festive special which aired on the channel in 2019.

The news follows reports earlier this year that a “bidding war” was underway between the BBC and Netflix over a future episode of the series, created by James, 45, and Ruth, 57. the time preceding the announcement.

It has now been suggested that the couple, who play Smithy and Nessa respectively in the series, believe they made the “right decision” in returning to the BBC. All three series of Gavin and Stacey, as well as its two specials, have been broadcast by the broadcaster since the show launched in 2007.

A source told The Sun that the creators, who are also credited as writers on the series, “have been having conversations” with Netflix about the next episode. However, it was said that they “showed their heart” in choosing the BBC.

The source told the outlet that the streaming platform “threw everything at them” to secure the episode, adding: “James, Ruth and the team were effectively offered a one-off, multi-million pound deal, and we promised them they would open the series. in front of a whole new international audience it was obviously tempting, but they felt like Gavin and Stacey belonged to the BBC – and the nation, really. »

They further commented: “The optics wouldn’t have been great if they were ‘sold out’, so they went with their hearts, not money.” The source added that the team was “happy” that the “right decision” was made for the new episode.

James announced that the series would return in an Instagram post on Friday. He shared a black-and-white photo of him and Ruth posing behind a script for the episode, which indicated it was written by the pair and was currently titled “Gavin and Stacey: The Finale.”

He wrote in the accompanying caption: “Some news… It’s official!!! We finished writing the final episode of Gavin and Stacey.” And he went on to tease: “See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. I love Ruth and James.”

The BBC sitcom originally aired from 2007 to 2010, before returning for a one-off Christmas special in 2019. It ended on a cliffhanger with an unanswered proposal and fans hoped the series would come back at some point. There is now a lot of excitement following the announcement that the series will return later this year for another episode.
