U2 star Adam Clayton has revealed that he and his wife Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho have divorced after more than a decade.

The guitarist, 64, and the lawyer, 45, said their split was amicable and they would co-parent their six-year-old daughter Alba.

The news was confirmed by a representative for the couple, who shared a statement to the Sunday World that read: “After more than 10 years of marriage, musician Adam Clayton and lawyer Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho have amicably divorced.

“Both will continue to be fully involved in the care of their daughter and ask that the family’s privacy be respected.”

Adam and Mariana married in an intimate ceremony at a registry office in Dublin in 2013.

The couple then held a second ceremony a few days later on the French Riviera, at the 14th-century Mandelieu-la-Napoule castle, attended by Adam’s bandmates Bono and The Edge.

At the time, it was reported that Adam was swapping Dublin for , where Mariana worked as associate director of art gallery Hauser & Wirth, following a career as a human rights lawyer.

They then welcomed their daughter Alba in July 2017, placing a personal advert in the Irish Times newspaper to share their happy news with the world.

The notice simply said: “Adam and Mariana Clayton are delighted to announce the birth of their beautiful baby girl Alba.”

Adam welcomed his first child, a boy, with an unnamed French woman in 2010, making him the latest U2 member to become a father.

He previously had a high-profile relationship with model Naomi Campbell, even becoming briefly engaged in 1994, before they split that same year.

Adam also popped the question to Susie Smith, a former assistant to Paul McGuinness, in 2006, but the couple split in February the following year.

Referring to his singlehood during an interview with Q magazine in 2001, he said: “I think one of the advantages of groups is that they allow you to be irresponsible for longer – whether or not a truly healthy position to take.

“I guess I was lucky in that I fucked until my mid-thirties and now I can have a more balanced view.” I think without a family or children, I know what I need.

Adam and Mariana dated for around four years before getting married, with Adam popping the question during the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil in 2012.

He opened up about the start of their romance in June 2017, after receiving the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his support of the MusiCares MAP Fund, which provides musicians with access to recovery treatment.

In his speech, Adam recalled: “I was in Brazil and I met a smart and beautiful lawyer. We started dating.

“I married Mariana in sobriety. I didn’t think this would happen. She’s never seen me drink, but she knows I’m crazy.

“Thank you, Mariana, for the wonderful life we ​​live together and for making each day more meaningful.”

The news comes a week after Adam – who has been with U2 since its inception – made a surprise appearance on Gardeners’ World.

The rock star visited his incredible garden for the programme, pointing out that it had taken 30 years to get to this point, which left social media viewers inundated with shock and awe for his garden.
