Derry drawn into ‘group of death’

-

DERRY face a potential rematch with their Ulster Championship winners Donegal in the All Ireland qualifying series following Tuesday’s draw.

The Oak Leafs, largely beaten by Jim McGuinness’ team at Celtic Park a few weeks ago, had a difficult journey to the round of 16.

They are in a group with the losers of next weekend’s Ulster final between Armagh and Donegal, the winners of the Connacht championship – Galway or Mayo – and Westmeath.

Each team will play one match at home, one away and one on neutral ground.

The provincial winners (top seeds) will have home court advantage against the third seeds in the first match, while the second seeds will host the fourth seeds.

Only one team will be eliminated from each group. The four group winners advance to the All-Ireland quarter-finals while the eight teams finishing second and third will compete in the preliminary quarter-finals.

In the Tailteann Cup, Antrim are in group two with Sligo, Wexford and Tipperary.

The All-Ireland final will take place on July 28 while the Tailteann Cup decider will take place on July 15.
