Las Palmas star Alberto Moleiro could join on a cut-price basis, with the Spanish club ready to sell the starlet for less than half the sum needed to meet his release clause.

Moleiro, 20, played his part in La Liga’s surprise this season. Garcia Pimenta’s newly promoted side sat in the top half of the table until March, only for a series of defeats to rob them of a fairytale chance of European qualification.

Liverpool are preparing for a pivotal summer in the transfer market by welcoming Michael Edwards back to Anfield. Edwards, alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes, will be tasked with taking care of business that will help the Reds hit the ground running following the departure of long-serving manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Merseyside club aren’t the only ones in the mix for Spain Under-21 international Moleiro, who helped Las Palmas secure promotion in 2023. Their months of groundwork still give them a chance of beating their fellow contenders, Inter Milan, to the punch.

According to AS (via Sport Witness), a bid of £21.5 million could be enough to land Moleiro. This is less than half of his £51.5million release clause, with the player last extending his contract while Las Palmas were still in the second tier.

Moleiro can operate as a number 10 or wide forward, and has two goals and three assists in La Liga this season. He helped his club get going despite losing compatriot Pedri to Barcelona in 2020, but sporting director Luis Helguera has been open about the club’s stature and occasional need to sell.

“We have no problem selling players like Pedri or like Moleiro or any other for that matter, because we really believe in what we do, in the work we do, in the way we develop our players and how we provide them with the tools they need. they can grow,” Helguera said in March. “So, for sure, very soon you will see young players of 17, 18 or 16 playing in the first team. That’s the way we understand and that’s the way we do things here.”

“I feel proud, really proud, when people compare me to him, but we are very different in the way we play,” Moleiro said of the comparisons to Pedri. “It’s true that I like a lot of players. I like Pedri, I like Fermin from FC Barcelona.

“I like all footballers who love the ball, who love to play with the ball. I still love it, and there are many who stand out because of it.”

Moleiro could become Liverpool’s first signing of the Arne Slot era, with a compensation package reportedly agreed for the Feyenoord boss to succeed Klopp after the end of the season. However, the new boss will also face the challenge of winning over the Reds’ experienced current crop.

“It’s important that he has the boys on his side,” former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson said of Slot. “He needs to get their attention, get their trust as soon as possible.”
