Former Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke believes Sunderland need to bring in a new manager who will provide “energy and impetus”.

The 52-year-old, who played for the Black Cats between 2006 and 2009, is one of the Premier League’s highest-profile goalscorers, having landed contracts with Aston Villa and United. He finished his career at Wearside and now hopes to continue next season under a new boss.

“Sunderland need to regroup this summer, think about the new manager and who will give them that energy and momentum,” he told Crypto Casinos. “There are a lot of questions about the club and not too many answers at the moment, there is a bit of uncertainty, even with the owners. This season, finish as high as possible, then next season, push for promotion on a clean slate.

Yorke also had sympathy for lower tier clubs after FA Cup replays were scrapped and added: “I sympathize with lower league clubs. Obviously, apart from playing against the big boys and having a chance to face them at home, the main problem is the money that stops flowing to the lower league clubs. There should be some sort of compensation for the FA to remove these replays.

“There has to be common ground. These clubs were left abandoned. Imagine Maidstone United, who reached the fifth round and lost to , drew against a big club and got a replay against a top six team, it would have bankrolled their entire season. It’s a payday for these clubs and there has to be a way around it. Big clubs should definitely give money to small clubs.
