Dua Lipa has spoken out about the aftermath of her performance of “New Rules” at the BRITs, which was turned into a meme.

In 2018, Lipa sang the song at the BRITs awards ceremony in a performance considered lackluster by many. A posted video of the performance later led to a comment, which is now a viral meme: “I love his lack of energy, go ahead girl, don’t give us anything!”

This was compounded by a snippet of her famous dance move in her collaboration with Calvin Harris “One Kiss”, which was called the “pencil sharpener” dance.

Talk to THE Guardian, Lipa called the moment “hurtful” and “humiliating”: “When people took that clip of me line dancing and just turned it into a meme, and then when I won the Grammy best new artist and people were like, “She doesn’t deserve it.” from that, she has no stage presence, she’s not going to stick around. These things were hurtful. It was humiliating.

She added that she had to “remove herself from Twitter,” saying she was upset because “people were tearing down everything I had worked on, and I had to learn all of this in front of everyone.”

“In the public eye, I was discovering who I was as an artist, as a performer,” she continued. “All of this happened when I was 22, 23 and still growing up. You have to build tough skin. You have to be resilient. »

Lipa also said The Guardian that the humiliation caused by the meme lasted “until I finished writing “Future Nostalgia” and did my first performance of “Don’t Start Now”, at the MTV Europe Awards”, believing that it had lasted “two years” in total.

“I never felt like I couldn’t get out of bed because of what I thought people thought of me,” she added. “I didn’t care that much. But that’s when it was the most intense for me.

She concluded by adding that she had been “really excited” by the positive public reaction once “Don’t Start Now” was released: “It was November 2019 when “Don’t Start Now” came out. , and I realized that I’m finally going to get up and dance in front of people after what they think of me for so long. And I went back, I did this performance, and everyone was like, “Oh, we were wrong.” » That really amused me.

Lipa recently released her third studio album “Radical Optimism,” which NME gave it three stars: “‘Radical Optimism’ doesn’t offer much else to remember.”

“Later this summer she will headline Glastonbury for the first time and will also headline a series of European festivals. It’s the kind of place where “Radical Optimism” could thrive: the album’s beachy vibe seems suited to the carefreeness of a festival. You just wish there was a little more to these songs.

Lipa said she “manifested” she would headline the iconic festival with her “album three”, telling Zane Lowe: “I feel like I’m going to get tears in my eyes talking about it . Glastonbury is just a festival, this one I loved going to as a fan. And get on that stage and perform…”

“I felt like with the third album I might deserve to be headlining or something,” she continued. “This is the first time I’ve ever said it out loud. […] This is all very surreal. Yeah, it’s just like… it’s my biggest dream. It’s headlining at Glastonbury! Friday night ! It’s true! When I’m in the studio and writing, the first thought that comes to mind is, “What’s it going to sound like at Glastonbury?” »

Furthermore, Lipa said she felt “very close” to people suffering from war, injustice and inequality.
